It was smooth sailing for Aidan O’Brien’s impeccably bred Giselle, who justified her cramped odds with a performance as silky as her pedigree.
Sent off the 30-100 favourite, the daughter of Frankel and the Breeders’ Cup heroine Newspaperofrecord had just two to beat—but while the numbers were thin, the expectations were anything but.
Keen in the early strides, she gave Ryan Moore a handful through the opening furlongs, the hood employed for the first time doing just enough to contain a bubbling energy. Moore, with that trademark economy of movement, tucked her in at the tail of the trio as Love Talk set what could best be described as a dawdle.
It wasn’t until they swung for home that the script began to follow its most predictable course. Moore simply shifted Giselle wide, and with barely more than a squeeze, the response was immediate and emphatic. Harpsichord could offer no resistance; Love Talk had long since waved the white flag. Nine lengths was the official margin, but the visual impression was wider still.
Giselle now finds herself a 10-1 shot for the Oaks at Epsom, a race that may well ask sterner questions—but on this evidence, she has plenty of answers waiting in reserve.
O’Brien, speaking from Naas, was pleased but measured: “It was a good experience for her. She’s been very on the bridle this spring—we’ve just been trying to settle her. Hopefully today’s race will help her learn.”
Coolmore’s Paul Smith echoed the optimism: “Ryan was very impressed—said she’s top-class and learning all the time. It was a slow pace, but she’ll have taken a lot from the run. The Oaks is very much in the conversation.”
Kevin Buckley added further context: “The hood helped settle her early, and while she was still a touch fresh, the ability was there for all to see. With that pedigree, the sky’s the limit.”
