TIME 1m 38.72s (fast by 0.28s) Lolly For Dolly scooted up the near side rail to claim the Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot for Tommy Stack.
"She likes being busy, she gets fat quick," was Fozzy Stack's summation after Lolly For Dolly gave his father his first Royal Ascot victory. The four-year-old Oratorio filly, sent off at 11/1, had already raced four times this season, winning a pair of Group Three races at the Curragh, before sweeping past rivals for a storming length and a half success in the mile contest. Fourth in last year's Sandringham Handicap at the Royal Meeting, Lolly For Dolly is an improved performer this season, thanks in large part to the fitting of blinkers. Stack, assistant trainer to his father, revealed: "She likes a battle and the idea was to take our time through the race because she likes a battle and she likes to horses. She is quite idle so that is why she wear blinkers and they help Wayne do his job. "The blinkers were the key to the operation, really. We thought that when she was fourth in the Sandringham that she didn't really kid herself and so decided to apply the blinkers this year and it has worked the oracle. "David (Keoghan - owner) loves coming here so it was always in the back of our minds to come here. She is very tough and she takes a lot of work as she has the constitution of an ox. "She stays well and she likes ing horses. The last time at the Curragh she took up about two (furlongs) down and probably got left in front a little bit too soon. "We will give her a little holiday now and then there's a Listed race at Tipperary and the Desmond Stakes we can look at before going to the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown."
Jockey Wayne Lordan was delighted as Lolly For Dolly also provided him with his first Royal Ascot success. He said: "Her heart is in the right place and she's tough. Everything happened today as we liked it and I'm just delighted for everybody. She's a great filly. At one stage in the middle of the race, I had to just switch her - she doesn't kill herself, and switching and moving around horses gets her mind going, so it worked today. "We went a nice gallop and I was just looking for a bit of room at halfway. When I weaved between two horses, she has picked up and she ran to the line quite well. She stays well and it's nice to have a first Royal Ascot winner. "I was hoping that the rain might come a bit sooner because I was worried the ground might be a little bit quick but she handled it well. "You are just watching all of the good racing and the good horses and I am just delighted to get the chance to ride a winner here."
Lolly For Dolly is the first Irish-trained winner of the Windsor Forest Stakes, which was first staged in 2004. Her owner is the husband of best-selling novelist Cecelia Ahern.

MIXED FORTUNES FOR TRAINERS OF PLACED HORSES
Horses trained by Sir Henry Cecil and David Simcock filled the minor places in the Windsor Forest Stakes as Chachamaidee took second and First City ran home for third. However, Cecil's other runner, Jacqueline Quest, refused to leave the stalls and took no part in the race, while the Simcock-trained I'm A Dreamer finished a well-beaten fifth.
Cecil said: "She's [Chachamaidee] run a great race. I'm not sure whether the stiff mile quite suited her. She might be better off at seven furlongs, maybe a race like the Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood, but I'm very pleased with her.
"The other filly [Jacqueline Quest] just didn't come out of the stalls, I don't know why."
Jacqueline Quest's jockey Johnny Murtagh added: "She gave me a lovely ride down to the start, loaded fine and just didn't jump out. I don't know why."
David Simcock said: "I'm really disappointed with I'm a Dreamer. William [Buick, jockey] said she has a lack of zip for one reason or another. There's no way she should be beaten by First City. In homework, in my opinion, one filly's considerably better than the other. I've just put it down to a bad day in the office. We'll do some tests and something will probably arise.
"I'm A Dreamer didn't disgrace herself but she was flat three [furlongs] out and that just isn't her. She's usually a strong-travelling filly and has real zest."
Of his placed filly, the trainer added: "First City has surprised us but she's very game, very athletic and it's very bad training that she hasn't won a Listed race!" |
