The second mile race in the QIPCO British Champions Series, the JLT Lockinge Stakes at Newbury this afternoon, saw last year’s star British miler, Canford Cliffs, lay down a big marker to French champion, Goldikova, and the sensational QIPCO 2000 Guineas winner, Frankel.

Canford Cliffs travelled well throughout the race on his seasonal reappearance to run out a length and quarter winner from Italian raider Worthadd, with reliable yardstick Premio Loco two and three quarter lengths back in third. Canford Cliffs’ stable companion, Dick Turpin, found the ground too quick and could only finish fourth.

The victory has put trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Richard Hughes at the top of the early leaderboards for the Jockey and Trainer of the QIPCO British Champions Series. Four trainers and jockeys are tied with one winner apiece, but Dubawi Gold’s second place in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas gives the Hannon-Hughes partnership a narrow edge.

Next stop for Canford Cliffs will be the third QIPCO British Champions Stakes mile race, the Sussex Stakes performance (which earned him a rating of 127).

“What everyone now wants to see is him sitting on the tail of Frankel (rated 130 after his Guineas victory) in one of the big all-aged mile races later in the season.”
